Currently AIS has 80 students at the age of 16 to 24 years. Our students come from villages up to 40 km away. Most of them come from poor families. Their parents are fishermen, agricultural labourers or unskilled workers in the construction industry.
Our students usually have passed the 10th standard of government school. After that they only have the possibility to go to govt. colleges with very limited capacity, or they have to go to a private college which they usually can not afford. So the young people have finished school but can not find a good job because the don’t have enough qualification.
Unfortunately only few young women take part in our program. This is mainly due to the traditional mindset that young women don’t need an expensive education because their future life will be in the family. We are offering discounts and scholarships for young women and are planning awareness campaigns in the villages to change this situation.
